CHIMI

CHIMI

Malicious spirits of hills and forests that plague hikers with hallucinations and dread.
Type: Medium aberration (elemental spirit), neutral evil Habitat: Mountains Region: Japan

Lore

Chimi is a malevolent mountain- and forest-dwelling spirit belonging to the class of kesin—elemental spirits. Within that class, it is treated as a type of akki, an evil force that contaminates the very air. Unlike most yokai, which possess a stable physical form, Chimi is a knot of hostile, immaterial energy that can stay completely invisible and intangible until it decides to act.

Whenever the spirit chooses to create a visible sign of itself, the image is purely illusory: a traveler may glimpse a shadowy predator shaped like a tiger, a towering oni, or even a familiar figure such as a mountain crone. Every outline is a projection individually tailored to the victim’s specific fears so it can frighten them as much as possible, leading to fatal detours or madness.
