Enenra is regarded as a relatively rare type of yokai—so rare, in fact, that it is not even fully material. We are essentially dealing with a mass of smoke, or rather a spirit that resides within smoke. It can shift its shape at will, wandering aimlessly in the air and occasionally assuming a human face or a vague humanoid outline. Some scholars propose that Enenra may be closely tied to infernal fire, noting its name is reminiscent of Enma, ruler of the underworld.

Historically, in many rural villages, smoke and flame were inseparable: hearths and campfires constantly produced smoke that awakened memories of old legends. Enenra existed simply as part of that smoke and was not known to harm anyone. Even today, one may see spirals of smoke from insect coils twisting into strange forms—these unusual shapes are often attributed to this playful yokai at work.
