TANUKI
Lore
Often translated as “raccoon dog,” Tanuki rank among the most iconic figures in Japanese folklore. Unlike fox spirits who are associated with guile, Tanuki are portrayed as merry, naïve beings with the power to transform into virtually anything. Ancient tales describe them as local deities (chihigami) who lost their divinity over time and became playful magical creatures specializing in illusions.
Tanuki are famous for their love of hearty meals and quality sake. One legend tells of a Tanuki who adored sake yet had no money. Collecting pebbles, it magically changed them into gold coins to purchase a drink. Once the enchantment wore off, the tavern owner found only mere stones. While deceptive, Tanuki may use their magic to protect villagers from malevolent spirits in exchange for hospitality.
